Speaking in a post-match interview with Azam TV, the former Kenya international was candid about his youthful squad’s shortcomings.
“The boys did their best for the match, but we were let down by our mental strength and concentration. It wasn’t about laxity; it was a matter of focus. Gor Mahia started slow but came back stronger, and that was the difference,” Monday said.
Murang’a Seal stunned the league champions with a blistering start, taking the lead in the fourth minute through prolific attacker Joseph Waithira.
Just fourteen minutes later, Francis Memusi doubled the lead, putting the Murang’a-based side in commanding control by the 18th minute.
By halftime, the seal appeared set to record a historic victory.
However, the second half told a different story. Within two minutes of the restart, Gor Mahia found the net twice, first through Felix Oluoch in the 47th minute, followed by Paul Ochuoga in the 49th.
The swift turnaround left Seal reeling, struggling to regain composure against a more experienced side.
Matters worsened ten minutes from time when Gor Mahia’s new signing and Ghana international Ebenezer Assifuah tapped in the winner from Ochuoga's pinpoint delivery, completing a remarkable comeback.
Monday admitted that the experience factor played a significant role in Gor Mahia’s resurgence.
“Honestly, experience played a part in their win. Being two goals down didn’t deter them; they remained patient in their build-up and struck decisively. That composure made the difference,” he added.
The loss also ended Seal’s impressive ten-match unbeaten run, the longest in the league this season, highlighting both the promise and the learning curve of Monday’s young squad.
Despite the setback, the former Shabana FC coach emphasised the importance of using the result as a motivational tool.
“Going forward, we have to motivate the players. Gor Mahia is a big team and tested us perfectly. Our focus now is to bounce back immediately when we host Bidco United on Sunday,” he concluded.
Murang’a Seal's encounter with Bidco United on Sunday 18, January will provide an immediate opportunity for redemption in their quest to crawl up the log ladder.
