The two teams met in an FKF Premier League match on Wednesday, 14 January, where Gor Mahia came back from two goals down at halftime to secure a 3-2 victory in what was a high-octane match.
Murang'a took the lead inside four minutes through Joe Waithira before Francis Memusi doubled their lead in the 18th minute.
However, Felix Oluoch and Paul Ochuoga scored in the 47th and 49th minutes, respectively, to set the tone for a comeback that was completed by an 82nd-minute strike by Ebenezer Koffi on his debut.
Speaking after the match, Akonnor explained the inspirational talk that secured the three points.
“When we went to the dressing room, I told them to show character. They should do something that we have never taught them, and that they should come out of their shelves.
Normally, when we are down, we struggle, and so we needed them to go out of their way, and I think we could not be more proud of the boys,” said Akonnor.
The Ghanaian tactician went ahead to evaluate substitutes Erick Morrison, Ebenezer Adukwaw, Patrick Esombe, Jackson Dwang' and Koffi, all of whom came in and played a major role in the comeback.
“The substitutes were also in the dressing room, and they got the message. The technical team is really proud of the team. They showed character, they showed attitude and fighting spirit,” he remarked.
The former Black Stars midfielder also appreciated the tactical discipline exhibited by his team.
“We got a shock in the early minutes when they scored under four minutes and got a second shortly, but I am glad that while normally that disorganises the team, it did not this time round.”
With the win, K’Ogalo ascended to the top of the league table, leapfrogging arch-rivals AFC Leopards with both teams on 30 points and only separated by goal difference.
