BB Bread FC head coach Ajastine Okoba has revealed the strategy behind his team’s stunning 1-0 victory over Kenyan giants Gor Mahia in the Mozzart Bet Cup.
The two sides clashed in the Round of 32 on Sunday, March 8, at Nyayo National Stadium, with the decisive goal coming in the 83rd minute from substitute Denis Muthini. The win followed BB Bread’s earlier upset of AFC Leopards in the Round of 64, further cementing their reputation as giant-killers.
Speaking after the match, Okoba credited meticulous planning and tactical discipline for the victory.
“Playing against a big team, we could not be open. We had to sit back, play a compact low block, and hit them on the counter, which eventually worked for us,” he explained.

In the second half, Okoba made bold substitutions, introducing speedy wingers, including Muthini, whose decisive run won the match.
“Having contained them for the better part of the game, we knew they would throw more numbers upfront in the dying minutes and leave gaps at the back where we could strike on the counter. That is how we won,” he added.
Okoba also credited his team’s fitness levels as a key factor.
“We equally had better match fitness as we play week in, week out in the league, while they brought players who have not had much playing time,” he said.
The win, he noted, was also the result of detailed preparation by the technical bench.
“It is a big win for us. We know many people did not expect us to win, but we were confident due to the preparations we had. We analyzed almost the last five Gor Mahia matches and knew where to cover.”
