The Kenyan football community is in mourning following the death of Engin Firat, former head coach of the Harambee Stars.
The Turkish tactician, aged 55, reportedly suffered a sudden heart attack at Istanbul Airport while returning to Turkey from Beirut, where he had been coaching Lebanese club Nejmeh SC.
Firat had joined Nejmeh SC in February 2026, working alongside Kenyan players Austin Odhiambo, Anthony Akumu, and Masoud Juma, all key figures in the Lebanese side. According to Nejmeh SC, the coach collapsed shortly after leaving Beirut, leaving the football world in shock.
“To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return. With great sadness and sorrow, Star Athletic Club mourns first team coach Captain Engin Firat, who passed away following a sudden heart attack at Istanbul Airport while on his way to Adana,” the club stated.
“During his time with us, he was known for his professional commitment and high ethics, leaving a lasting impression on the team and all members of the Nejmeh family. Our deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones.”
Back home, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) expressed profound grief at the loss of one of the national team’s most influential coaches.
“FKF is deeply saddened by the passing of former Harambee Stars Head Coach Engin Firat. Coach Firat served Kenyan football with dedication and passion, guiding the national team with professionalism and commitment during his tenure. His contribution to the growth of the game and the development of players will always be remembered,” the federation said in an official statement.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed led the personal tributes, highlighting Firat’s impact on Kenyan football.
“Our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of former Harambee Stars Coach Engin Firat. His contribution to Kenyan football will be fondly remembered. May his soul find eternal peace,” he said.
Firat joined Harambee Stars in 2021 initially on a short-term interim contract, which was later formalized. He remained in charge until December 2024, stepping down after criticism from then Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who had directed FKF to act regarding the coach.
“I have terminated my contract after the CS talked so much about me, but let Football Kenya Federation make the announcement,” Firat stated at the time.
During his tenure, Firat managed 23 matches, recording seven wins, seven draws, and nine losses. His period in charge saw high points such as a 2–1 victory over Qatar and impressive draws against Ivory Coast and Russia. However, there were also notable setbacks, including a 5–0 defeat to Mali in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, a 4–0 loss to Cameroon in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, and a 1–0 friendly defeat to South Sudan at Kasarani Stadium.
Firat frequently cited structural challenges as obstacles, particularly Kenya’s lack of FIFA-accredited stadiums, which forced the national team to stage several international fixtures in Malawi, Uganda, and South Africa.
Mozzart Sport joins FKF, Nejmeh SC, and the wider football community in extending deep condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Coach Firat. His legacy of professionalism, passion, and commitment to Kenyan football will not be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace.
