AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani says Sunday’s Mashemeji Derby offers his team the perfect chance to “exorcise the demons” that have haunted them over the past month.

Ingwe have failed to win any of their last three matches, a run that has left fans anxious and the team eager for redemption.

Leopards’ recent form has been underwhelming, with a loss and two draws in their last three outings. The slump began with a shock 2–0 defeat to Mara Sugar in Awendo, followed by a laboured draw against Murang’a Seal at Nyayo Stadium, a game they were fortunate not to lose.

Their latest match ended in a 1–1 draw against bottom-placed Kariobangi Sharks.

Ambani now faces his biggest challenge yet, the high-stakes derby against arch-rivals Gor Mahia, where pride, bragging rights, and crucial league points are on the line.

Reflecting on the recent poor run, Ambani explained the challenges that have affected the team.

“There were a few injuries and issues that destabilised the team over the last month, and we did not play well. But this is a new month, and we are ready to start it with a win against Gor.

It will be the game where we exorcise the bad spirits that have derailed us,” he said.

The coach also offered insights into the squad’s current mindset, noting that morale has improved despite recent setbacks.

“We are okay. The players’ mood and character are good. Everything is fine, and we are set for the game. Apart from a few injuries, which I do not want to mention for now, we are ready because any of the 30 players can step in,” Ambani added.

Speaking on motivation, Ambani emphasised that the drive to perform must come from within the squad rather than from external incentives. He highlighted the importance of high-profile matches in providing exposure for players.

“I think the players have to motivate themselves. Motivation is not only about incentives. They must know what they want from the game. Such games draw attention, agents attend, and this is the moment to sell themselves,” he said.

The former Leopards striker also reflected on his personal record in the fixture.

“I have not lost to Gor Mahia as a player or as a coach, and we go into the game to win it. But it is upon the players to deliver because I will not be on the pitch. I want them to make the supporters happy,” Ambani said confidently.

Sunday’s match kicks off at 3 pm and will be preceded by the women’s derby at 11:30 am.
