While he will be hoping to earn more minutes in the coming fixtures, there is also the possibility that the striker could be sent out on loan when the January transfer window opens.
Gor Mahia young striker Mark Shaban is eager to build on the limited but significant minutes he received in Wednesday afternoon’s 1-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz at Kasarani Stadium.
Shaban was introduced late in the match as K’Ogalo sought to protect a narrow lead against the Patrick Odhiambo-coached side after Alpha Onyango had given Gor Mahia an early advantage, a goal they defended resolutely until the final whistle.
Gor successfully weathered late pressure to secure all three points, ending a three-match winless run that had included two defeats and a draw.
The striker has found opportunities hard to come by this season, sitting behind several players in the attacking pecking order.
His late appearance, however, marked a proud moment for the former Shanderema Secondary School forward, who says the cameo has given him renewed confidence and motivation to push for more game time.
“It gives me confidence. Now that I am starting to get minutes, I can build myself gradually, and with more playing time, I believe things will continue to improve,” Shaban told the club media team.
Reflecting on his brief outing, the youngster felt he handled the situation well despite being thrown into a tense phase of the match.
“It was good, although I came in at a time of pressure. We stayed composed and managed to get the important three points,” he said.
Shaban also revealed that his instructions from head coach Charles Akonnor were clear and specific to help Gor Mahia manage the game by retaining possession.
“My role when I came in was to keep the ball. The coach told me to use my skills, retain possession, and avoid losing the ball because we were under a lot of pressure,” he explained.
While he will be hoping to earn more minutes in the coming fixtures, there is also the possibility that the striker could be sent out on loan when the January transfer window opens.
