The finisher has scored five goals in four games this season and aims at netting 26 times this term
Philemon Nyakwaka has seen a steady rise to rank among the best if not the best attacker in the National Super League (NSL) in his only second season in the league.
The winger who can also easily slot into the hitman role, in an exclusive with Mozzart Sport revealed motivation behind his goal banging mastery.
He notes that playing in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) is a childhood dream that he fancies to achieve in his career that he however, says started booming at a late age.
The former Maroon Commandos striker joined the millers at the start of the 2022-2023 campaign from fourth tier side Emuhaya FC and went on to cement his place convincing the legendary duo of John Baraza and Francis Xavier with his exceptional scoring ability.
He rewarded the tacticians trust in him with exemplary performance netting fourteen times and consequently, creating four goals in his first complete season in the second tier.
Nyakwaka, who previously turned out for the now defunct Dandora Love, designated that turning out for the millers in top flight is enough motivation for him to roll the balls in the nets since they gave him a career lifeline.
"I am convinced with what I have been doing in the previous season and at least it motivates me to push even more. My main concern is to see Mara sugar play in the premier League which is also my biggest dream but it will be more appealing doing it with a club that gave me a chance again, " he said.
A failed move to Posta Rangers in the just concluded transfer window is also another source of inspiration for the 25 years old attacker.
"Last season I was close to joining Rangers in the FKFPL but some last-minute issues forced me to go back to Mara and that even pumped me more to do better and grab that chance next time," added Philemon, a former Samba Boys forward.
Meanwhile, the attacker has set high his targets for the season as he aims at clinching the NSL top scorers gong and breaking Elly Saenyi record of 26 goals in a single campaign.
Saenyi scored 26 goals to emerge the league’s top scorer in 2021-2022 with Mwatate United before linking up with Ulinzi Stars, a record that is now under threat from Nyakwaka.
"I want to score as many goals as possible this season and come on top of the scorers’ chart. My target is 27, I want to challenge the record set by Saenyi, " he said.
The finisher has scored five goals in four games so far this season and will have a chance to add to his tally over the weekend as Mara Sugar welcomes staggering Vihiga Bullets.
