Gianluigi Donnarumma is now set to leave the club

What had been expected and all but certain for some time was confirmed on Saturday evening: Lucas Chevalier (23), until recently Lille’s goalkeeper, has signed a five-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain. The European champions announced that the deal was completed and presented their new “number one,” paving the way for Gianluigi Donnarumma’s transfer before the end of the transfer window. Where the Italian will go is still unknown — nothing is even close to being finalized yet — but what is certain is that one of the best goalkeepers in the world will not be staying. He was offered a new contract (his current one expires in 11 months) on slightly reduced terms, which he rejected, deciding instead to seek a new challenge.

In recent days, possible destinations have been mentioned — a return to Italy, Saudi Arabia, Manchester United, Galatasaray.. For now, though, that’s of less concern to the Parisians, who are thrilled with their latest signing.

Lucas is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe and a fantastic addition to our team. We welcome him to our big family. We’re continuing to build for the long term, and this is a major transfer for us,” said Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

I’m a kid who tonight is living his dream. Ever since I was little, I’ve wanted to play for a big club, at the highest level,” Chevalier said at his unveiling.

As reported in recent days, Lille received a total of 55,000,000 euros for the transfer, including about 15,000,000 in bonuses — which are essentially guaranteed, as they are tied to the number of matches played, and Chevalier will be the first-choice goalkeeper. This makes it the third-biggest goalkeeper transfer in football history, behind only Alisson (72,500,000) and Kepa Arrizabalaga (80,000,000).
