The long-awaited 2024 CHAN will finally kick off on Saturday, 2 August, with an opening ceremony as well as the first match between co-hosts Tanzania and Burkina Faso at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The biennial continental tourney will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, and after several months of upgrading and renovations, the stadia are ready to host the tournament, albeit with final touches ongoing.

The first match on Kenyan soil will see Harambee Stars host DR Congo on Sunday, 3 August at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

According to photos shared by the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Salim Mvurya, and various media outlets, the facility looks all but ready for the first match.

Kasarani was closed for upgrading and renovations in August 2023 and will be in use again two years later, come Sunday.

The playing surface at the facility looks all mature and, according to CAF, is of the right standard and quality, fit to host matches of CHAN’s stature.

With the installation of a new tartan track expected after CHAN, the running track has been covered by a green artificial turf for aesthetics and TV purposes, according to Local Organising Committee (LOC) chair Nicholas Musonye.

Still on the field, the LED advertising boards across the pitch have already been installed, making it the first time that the technology will be used at Kasarani.

On the stands, the branding by CHAN for publicity and advertising the tournament, especially on TV, has been completed.

While all the seats at the facility have already been numbered and reflected on the match day tickets, seating will be section-based, and fans can sit on any seat within the section that the ticket indicates.

The 48,000-seater stadium had been divided into four sections: regular, silver, VIP and VVIP. The former two sections compose about 46,000 and are already full, while the latter two are not sold and will be for invited guests.

According to the photos, the large stadium LED TVs are working with a few branding works remaining in the changing rooms and the VVIP section.

As for Nyayo National Stadium, Mozzart Sport managed to gain access to the stadium and took a tour inside the stadium and the changing rooms, as seen in YouTube videos by Gad Isaac.

The first match at Nyayo will be a Group A clash pitting two-time CHAN Champions Morocco against Zambia on Sunday, 3 August from 1800 hrs- the first match under floodlights.

In the videos, the playing surface at Nyayo which had already been used for two test matches, looks even better after it remained unused when the stadium was closed.

The pitch is in pristine conditions, complete with horizontal grass patterns. The patterns are achieved by mowing the grass in alternating directions causing them to reflect light differently.

Just like in Kasarani, the pitch side LED advertising boards have already been installed and so are the two big stadium LED screens used for announcements and replays. Fans can also watch VAR moments from the screens.

More interesting and for the first time in the country, the VAR machinery installation just behind the match officials bench is all but complete with only the screen which will be placed on match day remaining.

As was in the test matches, all seats at Nyayo have already been installed with the ones on the VIP section being foldable.

The media tribune which had already been in use has now been branded with 2024 CHAN colours for advertisement and TV purposes.

As is the requirement by CAF, Nyayo will have a total of four changing rooms; two on either side of the home and away teams.

According to the videos, each of the four changing rooms have a minimum of 25 lockers, more than the 23 required by CAF and fitted with ice bath bags, refrigerator, water dispenser, table, massage table, white board and tactical board.

Additionally, the changing rooms have washrooms with several toilets, bathrooms, sinks and urinals, all according to CAF requirements.

There are also referee changing rooms, each side of the home and away changing rooms each with four lockers, a refrigerator, water dispenser and a table.

There is also a room on the home team side that will be used as the match commissioner's office while the away side will host the ball boy changing room that can host over 15 ball boys.

The away side changing room will also house a medical room, independent from the one by either of the competing teams.

In conclusion Kenya has made tremendous investment and improvement on sporting infrastructure and is ready to host a successful 2024 CHAN tournament.
