Waithira’s decision comes as a timely boost for head coach Osborne Monday, who has quietly assembled a competitive side

Murang’a Seal have received a massive lift, in their push for a strong finish to the season, after talismanic forward Joe Waithira confirmed he will remain at the club despite sustained interest from several Kenyan Premier League heavyweights.

Waithira, the league’s leading scorer with 12 goals, had been strongly linked with moves to AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia and Kenya Police FC.

However, their pursuit will not bear fruit, at least in the mid-season transfer window, as Waithira is keen on serving Seal.

The former Sofapaka FC and Bandari FC forward has been in scintillating form, scoring back-to-back braces, the latest coming on Sunday in Murang’a Seal's 2-1 win over APS Bomet.

That victory pushed Seal’s points tally to 30, leaving them just six points behind league leaders Gor Mahia.

Remarkably, a side that was languishing near the bottom of the table only weeks ago is now firmly in the conversation for a potential title challenge.

Speaking in December, Waithira had openly acknowledged interest from rival clubs, though he stopped short of committing his future at the time.

“It is true there has been contact from several clubs. Some have been in touch directly, while others, I hear, are interested but have not formally expressed interest, so I treat that as rumours for now,” he said.

When asked whether he would still be at Seal by the close of the transfer window on 2 February, Waithira was cautious.

“I cannot give a definitive answer for that. If a solid offer arrives, I will have a sit-down with the club bosses and decide on the way forward.

I am not desperate to leave the club this January, but if an offer that is good for both the club and myself comes around, we will look at it and decide on the way forward.

For now, I am a Murang’a Seal player until maybe we have a new development,” he said.

Ahead of the closure of the window today, the striker has offered clarity and reassurance to the Seal faithful.

“I will not be leaving. I will stay here until at least the end of the season and then we will see. I want to tell the fans that I will remain with them. I want to see the team finish in the best position possible and hopefully, I will continue playing an important part in achieving that,” Waithira told Mozzart Sport.

Meanwhile, Waithira has his sights firmly set on silverware.

Murang’a Seal finished with bronze in last season’s Mozzart Bet Cup and the striker believes the club can go even further this time.

At least I want to make sure the team finishes in a good position and if possible, God willing, winning one of the cups would be very vital for the team. We will work and try to achieve that. We have a good team and a strong bench and I have full confidence we can achieve something good this season,” he added.

Waithira’s decision comes as a timely boost for head coach Osborne Monday, who has quietly assembled a competitive side playing some of the most attractive football in the league, while also picking up vital wins.
