Hussein said futsal will play a central role in shaping the future of Kenyan football, noting that the discipline has long been overlooked.

“We are new to futsal. It is a competition we have not been participating in, and now we will put in a lot of work and investment into it. The first immediate step is to start a futsal league,” Hussein said.

The FKF boss added that the new league will be instrumental in improving the overall quality of Kenyan football, especially with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) fast approaching.

For the first time, we featured in the futsal AFCON qualifiers. We are also developing beach football. With AFCON coming in 2027, these programmes will be critical in the development of our national teams, both men and women,” he said.

Hussein’s remarks come in the wake of Kenya’s exit from the Africa Futsal Cup qualifiers after an 18-11 aggregate defeat to Namibia.

The Harambee Sambas lost 8-4 in the first leg in Swakopmund, Namibia, before falling 10-7 in the return leg played in Nairobi last Wednesday.

Despite the setback, Hussein expressed optimism about the future, revealing that FKF plans to expand competitions and increase investment as the sport grows beyond the traditional 11-a-side format.

“2025 was great, but 2026 will be bigger. We are looking at better competition, more excitement, and more partners coming on board. This is just the beginning,” he said.

Hussein also acknowledged the importance of strong sponsorships in driving these programmes forward, citing the federation’s partnership with Mozzart Bet as a model of sustainable collaboration.

We sometimes value the wrong sponsors, but Mozzart Bet has shown it is possible to have a solid partnership with FKF that grows year on year. This is a major milestone for us, and we are very grateful,” Hussein noted.

On Thursday, the betting firm announced an enhanced three-year sponsorship worth Ksh 90 million towards the Mozzart Bet Cup.
