The Gunners decided to exercise their option to buy and make the Ecuadorian's move from Bayer Leverkusen permanent, signing a five-year contract with him

While everyone's focus is on the World Cup, Arsenal are taking care of business off the pitch. The Gunners haven't signed a new player, but they have secured the long-term future of one of their key defenders.

Today, the North London side announced that Piero Hincapie will remain at Emirates Stadium after the club exercised its option to buy, making the Ecuadorian's move from Bayer Leverkusen permanent.

The Gunners will pay approximately €40 million under the terms of the agreement, while the player has signed a contract until 2031.

This decision comes as no surprise, given Hincapie's performances during the previous campaign and his importance to Mikel Arteta's squad.

The 24-year-old made 39 appearances in all competitions last season and scored one goal, while his versatility allowed the Spanish tactician to deploy him at both centre-back and left-back.

He was named Arsenal's Player of the Month in February and April, underlining the consistency and quality of his performances.

The Gunners ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title and reached their first Champions League final in 20 years, conceding just 54 goals in 63 matches across all competitions, and Hincapie's role in that feat was considerable.

He is currently on World Cup duty with Ecuador, who face Germany tonight (23.00) in a must-win match if they are to reach the knockout stage.

And while the challenge could hardly be tougher, the news from London will undoubtedly give the defender an extra boost ahead of the decisive encounter.
