The government has announced plans to construct a modern 10,000-seater stadium in Thika town at an estimated cost of Sh850 million.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said construction will begin soon, with the project expected to be completed by the end of the year.
“Here in Thika, we have prioritised a modern stadium that will have a capacity of 10,000 fans. It will cost approximately Sh850 million and will be complete by the end of the year,” Mvurya said during the groundbreaking ceremony.
The new facility will replace the ageing Thika Municipal Stadium, which has for years been in a dilapidated state.
Once complete, it will feature an eight-lane modern running track, a standard football pitch, changing rooms, a canopy and a VVIP pavilion for high-level guests and dignitaries.
The stadium has also been earmarked as one of the training venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
However, the planned construction has raised concerns among traders operating around the current stadium, with fears that they may be displaced once works begin.
Mvurya sought to allay those fears, assuring residents that their livelihoods would not be disrupted.
“We will ensure that no business is disrupted by the construction of the new stadium. You do not need to be afraid because your livelihood activities will not be affected when this project starts,” he added.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, who also attended the ceremony, said existing amenities within the stadium grounds, including a basketball court and swimming pool, will remain intact.
“The amenities installed in the stadium to bolster sports will not be affected by the stadium construction,” Tuya said.
She further noted that Kiambu County already has three stadiums under construction, Kirigiti, Karatu and Thika, in addition to three constituency sports academies aimed at creating structured pathways for young athletes.
The Thika project adds to ongoing investments in sports infrastructure within the county and is expected to transform the town into a regional sporting hub, capable of hosting major events while stimulating business for local traders and service providers.
Thika is home to football sides like Thika Homeboyz ,TCM FC, Kabati Youth and many more grassroot teams.
