With both Kasarani and Nyayo unavailable, Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay has emerged as the most viable alternative to host the high-stakes clash

Gor Mahia vice chairperson Sally Bolo has clarified the uncertainty surrounding the much-anticipated Mashemeji Derby, scheduled for 30 November at Kasarani Stadium.

Her detailed explanation comes amid growing concerns over the availability of approved matchday venues, placing Kenya’s biggest football rivalry on the brink of yet another postponement.

In a statement posted on her official Facebook page, Bolo underscored that Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is legally and operationally subordinate to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

As such, she emphasized that, CAF-sanctioned fixtures automatically supersede domestic league engagements, regardless of magnitude or tradition.

The latest complications arise after FKF Premier League debutants Nairobi United booked Kasarani Stadium for their CAF Confederation Cup group-stage encounter against AS Maniema Union of DR Congo.

The match that falls within CAF’s mandated “third-day” window, the same day the derby is set to be played.

Bolo said that CAF interclub fixtures, especially during the group stages, follow strict regulations.

These matches must be played at either Kasarani or Nyayo Stadium, the only facilities in Kenya approved to host such kind of matches.

With Nyayo Stadium booked by the government for a state function on the same date, CAF’s requirements effectively eliminate both primary national stadiums from hosting the derby.

She also clarified that the Confederation Cup match could not be shifted to an earlier date, as CAF rules demand that visiting teams train on the match venue at least a day before kickoff.

With both Kasarani and Nyayo unavailable, Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay has emerged as the most viable alternative to host the high-stakes clash.

FKF is expected to provide final guidance on whether the derby will proceed as scheduled or be rescheduled.

If the derby fails to take place, it would mark the third postponement in just one year.

On 24, November 2024, the match was called off due to renovations at Nyayo Stadium.

On 2, May 2025, the rescheduled clash was again cancelled, as both Kasarani and Nyayo were unavailable due to CHAN 2024 preparations.

Now November 2025, the venue crisis threatens yet another derailment of Kenya’s most storied football contest.

Responding to claims from a section of AFC Leopards supporters alleging that Gor Mahia were “afraid” and using the venue crisis as an excuse, Bolo dismissed the accusations as emotional rather than factual.

"Dear football lovers, I have seen the noise coming from the AFC Leopards corner. Let me educate you politely before emotions start fighting with basic football logic,” she wrote.

She reiterated that the issue was purely logistical and regulatory rather than competitive fear, noting Gor Mahia’s long-standing dominance in the historic fixture.

"We are waiting for FKF’s directions, and once the venue is confirmed, we shall meet you properly because trust me, we are very sure of beating you,” she added.
