The move is widely viewed as a clear statement of ambition by the record 21-time league champions, who are keen to reclaim their domestic dominance after enduring a rare trophyless campaign last season.
With Gor Mahia having conceded 11 goals in 15 league matches so far, shoring up the defensive department has been a priority for the technical bench, and Odhiambo’s return is expected to add both depth and experience at the back.
Announcing the signing, the club expressed delight at welcoming back a familiar face.
“We are pleased to announce the signing of defender Frank Odhiambo from Swedish side Djurgårdens IF. Frank returns on a two-year deal. Welcome back, Frank Odhiambo,” read a statement shared by Gor Mahia.
Odhiambo returns with invaluable European experience gained during his time in Sweden.
After joining Djurgårdens IF, the former Bongonaya FC defender embarked on a series of loan spells designed to aid his development and exposure to competitive football.
He was initially loaned to IFK Haninge, where he featured until 2023, before moving to Vasalunds IF for another stint aimed at accelerating his progress.
In 2024, Odhiambo spent a year with Vasalunds IF before securing another loan move to AFC Eskilstuna, continuing his steady growth in the Scandinavian leagues.
His most recent developmental spell saw him turn out for IF Karlstad, where he further honed his defensive craft and match awareness.
A former FKF-PL champion with Gor Mahia in 2022-23 season, Odhiambo now reunites with the club as they pursue a historic 22nd league title.
His return bolsters an already competitive defensive unit that includes experienced names such as Michael Kibwage, Sylvester Owino, Lewis Bandi, Siraj Mohamed and Bryton Onyona, giving the technical team tactical flexibility and reliability at the heart of defence.
Gor Mahia, coached by Ghanaian Charles Akonnor, currently sit at the summit of the 18-team FKF-PL standings with 30 points, tied with arch-rivals AFC Leopards but holding a crucial match in hand.
As the title battle heats up, the return of the Harambee Stars defender could prove pivotal in K’Ogalo’s quest to restore their dominance on the domestic front.
