Despite Ghana possessing an array of exceptional midfield options, Morrison’s performances have sparked growing calls for his inclusion in the national team

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor believes Enock Morrison has done enough to earn inclusion in the Ghana national football team, insisting the midfielder’s current form can no longer be overlooked.

The 26-year-old, a former Asante Kotoko SC player, has been one of the most consistent performers in the FKF Premier League this season, and his influence has been central to Gor Mahia’s push for the title.

The record league champions currently sit top of the table on 56 points, seven clear of their closest challengers, AFC Leopards and look destined to bag a record-extending 22nd league title.

Despite Ghana possessing an array of exceptional midfield options, Morrison’s performances have sparked growing calls for his inclusion in the national team, but he was left out of the current Black Stars squad preparing in Austria for international friendlies against Austria and Germany.

Akonnor admits the omission is understandable based on past form, but maintains the conversation must now shift as the midfielder continues to deliver.

“He’s not been in the picture for a long time, probably because of his performances, and now he’s doing very well, so maybe now they can start to look at him in that aspect,” he told Graphic Sports.

“Yes, he’s doing very well, so now is the time to start looking at him. In the past, he wasn’t in that category, so it’s no surprise he wasn’t invited.”

Breaking into the Black Stars squad, however, remains a challenge, but Morrison’s consistency has placed him firmly on the radar as the technical bench fine-tunes its squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Akonnor also expressed confidence in head coach Otto Addo and welcomed the strengthening of the Black Stars technical team, describing it as a key step towards building a competitive side capable of making an impact on the global stage.

Looking ahead to Ghana’s Group L fixtures against Panama, England and Croatia, Akonnor called for a disciplined and well-prepared approach, stressing the importance of physical, tactical and psychological readiness.

“It’s a manageable group, we can achieve success and qualify for the next stage,” he said.

“Our technical team has been strengthened, so they will do a good job. We can go as far as we can depending on our determination and how strategic we are, and ensuring every needed tool is working well.”

He singled out the opening match as crucial to Ghana’s chances.

“Our first match is very important. We have to beat Panama; it’s a must-win. We must not underrate them,” he said.

We will respect England and Croatia, but there is no way we should underrate Panama. If we win that match and get three points, it will be key to our success.”
