The 19-year-old, who recently captained Kenya at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, becomes the latest high-profile export from Sofapaka, bringing to an end a remarkable two-year spell with the 2009 Kenyan Premier League winners.

In an emotional farewell, Sofapaka confirmed the departure of their assistant captain through a heartfelt message shared across the club’s official social media platforms:

"Baron Ochieng says thank you and goodbye. Sisi kama familia twasema asante na Mola aendelee kukujalia (As a family, we say thank you and may God keep taking care of you). All the best in your new home."

Speaking to Mozzart Sport club team manager Hillary Echesa, confirmed the transfer, revealing that Ochieng has officially joined the Egyptian giants on a long-term deal for an undisclosed fee.

“Yes, Baron has completed his transfer to Zamalek SC on a five-year contract. The agreement was reached for an undisclosed fee.

As a club, we are proud of his contribution and development during his time with us, and we wish him nothing but success in his new adventure,” Echesa told Mozzart Sport.

Ochieng’s story is one of rapid rise. Having started his professional career at National Super League (NSL) side Kibera Black Stars, the defender made a leap to Sofapaka in 2023 and quickly grew into one of the most dependable figures in the squad.

The diminutive right back's leadership qualities were soon recognised as he was handed the assistant captain’s role, an uncommon feat for a teenager.

His performances at club level opened doors to the national stage. He first earned a call-up to the Kenya U18 side for the 2023 CECAFA Junior Championship held in Kisumu and Kakamega before featuring for the Rising Stars during the Four Nations Tournament in Malawi in March 2024.

Three months later, in June, he broke into the senior squad, earning his first-ever Harambee Stars call-up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against the Ivory Coast and Burundi.

Earlier this year, in February, Ochieng captained the Rising Stars in their maiden appearance at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, a tournament that placed him firmly in the spotlight of scouts and clubs across the continent.

For Sofapaka, the deal revives memories of their landmark 2015 transfer of striker Fiston Abdul Razak to South African powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns, where the 2009 champions sold the Burundian forward for R3 million (approximately Ksh21million).
