Leopards have been hunting for players to improve the team ahead of the new 2025/26 season and identified the striking department as one of the main areas of concern.
Mugane posted impressive performances in the 2024/25 NSL season, where he finished as the joint top scorer with 22 goals and helped his team to secure fifth place in the league.
Despite the limited supply of proven goal scorers, Ingwe, through their X (formerly Twitter) account, have now confirmed that they have come out of the market with one of the players in high demand.
“AFC Leopards is pleased to announce the signing of Ellias Mugane from National Super League side Fortune Sacco FC.
The 2024/25 NSL top scorer joins the den on a 2-year contract,” reads Leopards’ post.
Mugane, who is a police officer in Kirinyaga, has been a huge part of Fortune Sacco and led their search for promotion, which is yet to be successful.
The forward was one of the players eyed by league champions Kenya Police FC, but the former Mozzart Bet Cup winners pulled out of the move, which would have compelled Mugane to join the South C-based side.
Just like the majority of top-tier teams, Leopards have been in search of a prolific striker, a venture that has proven to be difficult in the current transfer window.
Last season, part of the Leopards' underwhelming performance was attributed to the lack of a prolific striker, as none of their marksmen scored more than five league goals.
The 1998 league champions will be hoping that Mugane replicates his NSL form and ends the 28-year wait for a league title.
Apart from Mugane, Leopards also announced the promotion of South Sudanese wonderkid Deng Kang from the youth team.
The FKF Premier League window closes at midnight on Friday, 5 September.
