Comeback and goal fest in Red's first pre-season clash against Sunderland

The Andoni Iraola era at Liverpool got off to a winning start. The Reds opened their pre-season campaign with a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Nashville. Alongside six goals and impressive performances from several youngsters, the match was highlighted by stunning strikes from Dominik Szoboszlai and Enzo Le Fee, an early glimpse of the new manager's tactical approach, and an injury concern involving Joe Gomez.

The game could hardly have started worse for Liverpool's defense. Just eight minutes in, Joe Gomez was forced off with a muscle injury. Although the experienced defender walked off the pitch on his own, his early exit raised concerns. He was replaced by 18-year-old debutant Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who looked remarkably composed alongside Ndiaye at the heart of the defense. Ndiaye earned a place in the starting lineup due to the absence of Jeremy Jacquet, who missed the match with a minor injury but is expected to return to training during the tour.

Iraola also handed starts to an exciting teenage front three consisting of Kieran Morrison, Will Wright, and Rio Ngumoha. It was Morrison who gave Liverpool the lead in the 15th minute, creating space for himself before curling a precise left-footed effort from the edge of the box into the net for the first goal of the Iraola era.

Sunderland responded in identical fashion in the 30th minute. Le Fee drove towards the penalty area before unleashing a thunderous strike into the top-right corner, leaving Giorgi Mamardashvili with no chance as the sides went into halftime level at 1-1.

At the break, Iraola introduced five changes, bringing on Dominik Szoboszlai, Trey Nyoni, Kerkez, Chiesa,and Koumas, while Sunderland changed their entire lineup.

The fresher visitors made the better start to the second half and completed the turnaround in the 49th minute. Sunderland's Ukrainian midfielder Tutierov fired an excellent shot beyond Mamardashvili to make it 2-1.

However, Sunderland's lead lasted only a few minutes before Szoboszlai produced the moment of the match. The Hungarian international collected a loose ball around 22 meters from goal and smashed an unstoppable first-time volley into the top corner to level the score at 2-2.

As the game progressed, Iraola continued to hand opportunities to more academy talents, including Chambers, Ramsey, Woodman, and Scanlon.

Liverpool completed the comeback through Federico Chiesa, who coolly finished from a difficult angle after an excellent through ball from Ramsay. Koumas then wrapped up the victory. Chiesa combined brilliantly with Szoboszlai, whose perfectly timed pass released the Welsh forward, and Koumas made no mistake to cap an outstanding individual display.

Despite being only the first pre-season friendly with a mixed squad, Iraola's tactical ideas were already evident. Liverpool pressed aggressively high up the pitch, while the wingers were given considerably more defensive responsibility than in previous seasons.

The holding midfielder regularly dropped between the split center-backs to initiate attacks, although there were also visible shortcomings, including risky passing in defense and occasional mistimed pressing that left too much space for Sunderland to exploit.

A winning start provides a solid foundation for the remainder of Liverpool's preparations, but a clearer picture of Iraola's project will emerge only once all of the club's key players return to the squad.
