Harambee Stars defender Kevin “Chumsy” Okumu has lifted the lid on the specific instructions he received from coach Benni McCarthy during Thursday’s tense draw against Angola.
The KCB right-back was introduced in the 80th minute, replacing Daniel Sakari of Kenya Police FC, with the game delicately poised and the visitors threatening to snatch all three points.

McCarthy’s message to the defender was simply to tighten the backline and exploit any opportunity for a quick counterattack.
"The coach simply told me to defend well to secure the points and hit on a fast break if we had the opportunity, since I was still fresh from the bench,” Okumu revealed.
Thrown straight into the action, the youthful defender faced an immediate test, tasked with containing the lively Anderson Cruz.
It was a challenge he managed with composure, neutralising the Angolan winger’s influence in the dying stages.
Reflecting on his debut, the former Wazito FC and Nairobi City Stars player expressed pride and gratitude, acknowledging both the competitive nature of the national team and the trust placed in him.
"My debut has been good, to be honest. I am proud of the milestone, and I’m glad my efforts are being recognised. The coach’s trust means a lot because it’s not easy when we have so many players capable of stepping up. To be selected is an honour, and I believe it has happened at God’s appointed time,” he said.
With Kenya set to face Morocco on Sunday, 10 August, at Kasarani Stadium, Okumu underlined the squad’s determination to claim maximum points.
Victory over the Atlas Lions would cement Kenya’s place at the top of Group A with seven points and secure a historic quarter-final berth.
"Against Morocco, it is going to be even tougher, but our focus is squarely on winning the match and sealing a place in the next round,” Okumu added.
The Harambee Stars will complete their group fixtures against Zambia on Sunday, 17 August, in what could be a decisive encounter for knockout stage qualification.
