With the Harambee Stars on the cusp of making CHAN history, celebrated Kenyan musician and entrepreneur Kevin Bahati has pledged a KSh 1 million bonus to the national team should they overcome North African heavyweights Morocco in their decisive Group A clash this afternoon.
Victory over the two-time CHAN champions would not only secure Kenya an automatic berth in the quarter-finals of the continental tournament on their debut appearance, but also guarantee a share of the Ksh600 million prize pool promised by President William Ruto.
In a video message shared on Facebook, Bahati, flanked by his wife and business partner Diana Marua, assured the players that the money was already set aside through their company, ready to be handed over immediately after the match as a gesture of appreciation and motivation.
"We are bringing KSh 1 million. If Harambee Stars beat Morocco because we have to qualify, we will personally hand over the money to the players. And for you, Austin, should you score, we have an extra KSh 200,000 for you. Dear Kenyans, let’s come out in our numbers and support the Harambee Stars,” Bahati declared.
The pledge adds to a growing wave of incentives for the team. President Ruto has promised KSh 1 million for every win, KSh 500,000 for a draw, and a historic KSh 600 million should the Stars lift the trophy.
For head coach Benni McCarthy's men, the match is more than just a fight for three points; it is a moment to etch their names in Kenyan football folklore.
A win would ensure a smooth, historic passage to the last eight, where they would face the winner or runners-up of Group B that features Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, and co-hosts Tanzania, who qualified for the quarter-finals last night after beating Madagascar 2-1 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
Kenya will conclude their Group A campaign against Zambia on Sunday, 17 August, a fixture that could determine not just progression, but also the coveted top spot in the group.
