Should he complete the switch, Opiyo will join a list of Kenyan players who have donned Zesco’s colors, including the successful trio of Jesse Were, Teddy Akumu, and David Owino

AFC Leopards goalkeeper Levis Opiyo is reportedly on the verge of joining Zambian giants Zesco United following the expiry of his contract.

Opiyo, who has served Ingwe for the past four years, appears set for a new chapter, with reports from Zambia suggesting he already has an agreement in place with Zesco.

The Ndola-based club is rebuilding ahead of the upcoming season in which they will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup.

According to Zambian journalist Wami Katanga, Opiyo is being lined up as a replacement for Zesco’s outgoing shot-stopper, Toaster Nsabata.

“Kenyan goalkeeper Levis Opiyo has also been one of the goalkeepers considered by Zesco United to replace Toaster Nsabata,” he posted.

He further indicated that the player has reached a verbal agreement with the club, with only formalities remaining before the transfer is finalized.

“Opiyo has also verbally agreed to accept Zesco's offer and awaits the club to make the final steps to complete the deal. He is a free agent as he is yet to commit to a new contract at AFC Leopards,” added Katanga.

If the deal is completed, it will be a major blow for AFC Leopards.

Opiyo has been one of the league’s standout goalkeepers in recent seasons.

With a shortage of quality goalkeepers locally, Ingwe may struggle to find a suitable replacement.

The move could see mid-season signing James Ssetuba elevated to the starting role, though he has struggled to break into the team since arriving in February.

Opiyo boasts a wealth of top-flight experience, having previously played for Thika United, Western Stima, Posta Rangers, Nairobi City Stars, Gor Mahia, Mahakama FC, Wazito FC, Mathare United, Vihiga United, and most recently, AFC Leopards.

Should he complete the switch, Opiyo will join a list of Kenyan players who have donned Zesco’s colors, including the successful trio of Jesse Were, Teddy Akumu, and David Owino, as well as Vincent Oburu and Ian Otieno.
