Reigning under 20 World Champion in 1500m starting all over after returning to athletics from yearlong military training

"My body is yet to revert to competition mode so I am going back to the basics." Those were the sentiments of reigning World U20 1,500m champion George Manangoi after the Athletics Kenya's (AK) first track and field meet last weekend.

It was the junior's first race since leaving for military training last year were he graduated in September 2020 and he ran in one of the 1500m heats on Saturday and missed qualification to the Sunday final.

"I ran just that one heat and it is clear what I need to do now. I am getting down to some serious training for the next four weeks or so. I will probably skip the next AK meet and test my body again with the third and final meet slated for April 1- 2," said Manangoi.

He continued, "There is a lot of action scheduled from April including the Olympics qualifiers and I have to be in my best form as I intent to represent the country at the rescheduled Olympics."

The former World Under-18 champion is counting the 2020 period, where most events were postponed or cancelled due to Covid-19, a blessing in disguise for him as he will now be able to suit up for the championships that he would otherwise have missed had they been held in 2020 as he was yet to graduate from military school.

A younger brother to another track star Elijah Manangoi, the youngster made his international senior debut in 2019 during the Africa Games in Rabat, Morocco and was also part of the Kenyan continent to the World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar.
