Romero’s stupidity helped United win another game

Mbeumo and Fernandes were scorers against 10-men Tottenham
"At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don't - as has been happening for several years now. They only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies" wrote Cristian Romero on his Instagram post after a 3-2 loss to Bournemouth at the beginning of January. Tottenham boss Thomas Frank talked about this post, which was branded as a critique of the club’s executives, and labelled it as a ‘mistake’. He also said the issue has been resolved internally and decided to stick with his captain and team leader. Romero started the game against Manchester United, but showed no leadership qualities or maturity. Instead, he made a reckless tackle in the 29th minute and got a red card, leaving his teammates to fight for 60 minutes against in-form Manchester United. They failed, and Spurs extended their winless streak in the Premier League to seven games: Manchester – Tottenham 2-0.

That was Romero's second red card of the season, his sixth since he's been at Tottenham, which makes him the player with the most red cards in that period in the Premier League. With Tottenham’s injury record and current form, this was never going to be an easy game for the Spurs, even with all 11 men on the field, but when Romero tried to get to the ball ahead of Casemiro and made a reckless tackle, it was all over. Bryan Mbeumo scored the winner ten minutes later and United had numerous chances to settle the game way before 90th minute, but they used only one of them, in the 80th minute, when Bruno Fernandes made Old Trafford happy.

Before the opening goal United had two good opportunities (from Casemiro and Cunha) but both were from long range and Vicario saved one and the second shot went just near the crossbar. The Red Devils continued to press after Mbeumo’s goal but there were no clear chances. Vicario was under pressure in the second half as he managed no less than four shots from United’s players and it was only a matter of time before the second goal would arrive. Diallo and Cunha scored one goal each but both goals were offside until Sesko’s header came to Fernandes who resolved all possible dilemma’s about the winner. United is now firmly in the fourth place and are on a roll with four straight league wins.
