Carrick urges Manchester not to rush to appoint him the manager

United's interim boss is currently in top form with all three wins

He wasn’t the first choice, he wasn’t the name people thought of first, he had competition for the job, but he eventually won it – Michael Carrick got the job as Manchester United interim manager and so far, he has been a revelation. Former Red Devil, who once said that he didn’t want to be the manager when he finishes his playing career, has become just that. And when he got sacked by second-tier Middlesbrough, it didn’t look so good. But now he is in his beloved United and it’s doing great. But down-to-earth and humble as he is, even in a situation where his results are giving much argument to his bosses to appoint him full-time, Carrick puts the club at first place.

The Red Devils made a ton of wrong hires, both for players and managers, in recent seasons, so Carrick urged them not to make any knee-jerk decisions come May, including his hire.

I’m loving what I'm doing. I'm here, and I feel at home here, but I fully understand the situation, so I'm not getting too carried away. Nothing has changed. To be honest, it's not going to change what I do or how I feel about it. I think I'm fully aware of the role I'm doing here and the responsibility I've got. We want to be successful. I want the club to be successful beyond the end of the season: if that's me, if that's somebody else. At this stage, I can't control that, and we'll see what happens. But it's certainly about trying to improve the team and keep making Manchester United stronger and improving all the time. So results over a short period time don't change that. If they have changed that there is something wrong. It can't be so kneejerk whether it's really good or whether there's a few issues we need to solve. It's steady progress really. Football can twist and turn just as quick, so we have got to keep level and focus on what we need to do” said Carrick before the Tottenham game.

So far, Carrick has been nothing but excellent. He won against City, Arsenal and Fulham and is back at the fourth spot. His goal for the season (European football in 2026) is more than achievable so far, and with a win against Tottenham, United can even put some pressure on the third-placed Aston Villa, who are facing a tough road game against Bournemouth. The players are happy again as Carrick found a way to motivate them, and the change of formation certainly helped. They also have an advantage over Tottenham, who are in shaky form and have a lot of injured players, while coach Thomas Frank, unlike Carrick, is under huge pressure and could even be sacked if Spurs lose this one.
