The victory earned the university side a well-deserved promotion to Division One, where they will now compete at the Prinsloo 7s slated for Saturday, 2 to Sunday, 3 August at the Nakuru Athletic Club.

At the centre of Zetech’s recent success is Brayan Ondego, a player whose journey has captured the admiration of both teammates and national team selectors.

Ondego made history as the first Zetech Oaks player to earn a national team call-up, featuring in the 13-man Kenya Sevens squad during the Dubai leg of the 2024/2025 HSBC SVNS Series.

He was part of the Chipu 7s set-up in 2021, and it took Ondego three years of persistence, discipline, and standout performances to finally break into the senior national team.

His breakthrough came during the 2024 circuit, where his displays earned him a spot with the Morans at the Safari Sevens in October, before finally making the jump to Shujaa under head coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport after the Driftwood 7s, the team’s coach, Ramsfield ‘Remmy’ Matekwa, noted that several players impressed during the tournament, among them Ondego.

“Bryan Ondego brings experience and hard work,” Remmy offered.

“We have standout players like Fidel Chimwani and Gilbert Odhiambo, whose combination in the forwards is outstanding. Anderson Oduor, our playmaker, is performing well, while Johnson Wafula adds leadership and belief. Together, this group forms a tightly-knit family,” he continued.

Heading to Prinsloo 7s, Remmy remained optimistic about the team’s prospects as they enter Division One, a tier he described as familiar yet demanding.

“Teamwork, responsibility, cohesion, determination, discipline, and respect for our opponents- those are our guiding values. Division 1 is a space we've been in and tested. We're currently working on improving our intensity, reaction time, and overall awareness,” he offered.

The Oaks have been drawn into a competitive Pool B at the Prinsloo 7s, where they will face Strathmore Leos, Menengai Oilers, and Daystar Falcons. Still, Remmy believes his side is up for the challenge, thanks to a strong core of players

“Key areas of improvement for us include focusing more on breakdowns and strengthening our communication. Our approach is to take one game at a time, address areas that need work, and continue building resilience,” he disclosed.

Remmy believes the National Sevens Circuit plays a vital role in shaping his team both on and off the pitch.

“The National Sevens Circuit is a great tournament that fosters interaction among players from different clubs. It allows us to observe others, face new opponents, and grow as a team. It builds not just skills but belief as well,” he said.
