Kenya 7s endured a disappointing run in the Vancouver leg of the World Sevens Series, finishing last after a 19-14 loss to Ireland in the 11th-place playoff at BK Arena, Canada.
This marked Shujaa’s lowest finish since their return to the global series under head coach Kevin Wambua.
The team struggled throughout the tournament, failing to register a single win.
Their campaign began on a rough note with a 28-0 loss to Argentina, followed by a 33-7 defeat to France and a 26-10 loss to Great Britain, leaving them at the bottom of their group.
The poor run of results relegated them to the 11th-place playoff, where they fell to Uruguay, before their final loss against Ireland.
Hoping to salvage some pride in their last match, Vincent Onyala provided an early spark for Shujaa, scoring within the first minute.
Anthony Mboya Omondi converted to give Kenya a 7-0 lead. However, Ireland responded swiftly, with Dylan O’Grady touching down and Mark Roche adding the extras to level the score at 7-7 after four minutes.
Before halftime, O’Grady bagged his second try, pushing Ireland ahead 14-7.
In the second half, a yellow card to Ireland gave Shujaa a lifeline, with co-captain Samuel Asati capitalizing to score a try and a successful conversion to tie the game 14-14 with two minutes left on the clock.
Despite Kenya’s efforts, a lapse in defense allowed Bryan Mollen to cross for a decisive late try, sealing a 19-14 win for Ireland and condemning Shujaa to a winless outing in Vancouver.
With the Vancouver leg concluded, Shujaa will shift their focus to the next tournament, set for March 28-30 in Hong Kong.
