The games were making a comeback after two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic
Upper Hill School sealed a place in the national rugby school games but head coach James Mwangi admitted that the quality levels of the games has taken a dip.
The reigning national rugby 7s champions booked a return to the national games after beating Dagoretti High School in the semi-finals.
Mwangi admitted that the quality of rugby in the just concluded Nairobi region school games has gone down with a number of the players clearing school during the Covid-19 break.
“The level of the games has gone down a bit because we are left with players who don’t have a perfect understanding of rugby.
The players we had been working with for a long time have already cleared school and the ones we currently haven’t gotten into the system well,” said Mwangi.
Upper Hill however suffered a narrow 7-5 loss to Ofafa Jericho High School in the final as both schools earned a ticket to represent Nairobi in the nationals.
Mwangi also admitted that preparations for the school games were affected by the Covid-19 and election break where students were forced out of school.
“It was really hard to prepare the boys, the government stopped sports for two years because of Covid-19 and there was also that election disruption.
We have however been working with the players while they were at home, we went to Nondies and trained the boys a bit to get them ready for the tournament,” added Mwangi.
