The Strathmore forward debuted for Kenya 7s during the Hong Kong 7s under former coach Damian McGrath.
The joy of seeing Kenya 7s’ superstar forward George Ooro, alias Japolo, shove aside opponents to score tries on the pitch is a delight for fans, but the excitement does not end there.
The spectators eagerly await his electrifying dance moves, a signature spectacle that adds an extra spark to his victories. Ooro turns the pitch into his stage as soon as he goes over the whitewash, wowing the audience with his contagious energy.
The HSBC 7s playoffs were no different for the Chianda Boys’ alumnus, as he lived up to the billing and did not waste time in transforming the track into his dance floor. He scored a try against Chile and another against Germany, creating moments the audience will live to remember.
Mozzart Sport caught up with him during their glamorous homecoming on Tuesday morning, curious to understand the motivation behind his electric moves.
As it turns out, his aim is always to wow his audience while also catching his breath after a hard run to the try box. Ooro loves being happy and surrounding himself with positive energy.
The self-proclaimed ‘King’ of rugby is not a Master of Ceremony (MC) or DJ, but he visibly possesses an entertaining gene that shines through his signature celebrations.
“I love being happy and spreading good energy around. I believe that you can create the energy you want and I strive to be in the right mood every time. I love it when my fans are happy. Apart from us winning, they will go home entertained,” he told Mozzart Sport.
He particularly loves the urban tone song ‘Gotha’ by Breeder LW, which captivates him with its electrifying dance moves. The song has dynamic beats and a vibrant rhythm, perfectly complementing Ooro's energetic personality and his flair for celebration.
“Play me Gotha anytime and I will dance to it,” he excitedly offered.
Ooro further expressed optimism that he will represent Shujaa in the upcoming Paris Olympics. He was part of the team that secured a historic 17-12 win over South Africa last year to qualify for the Olympics.
He hopes to take his A-game to Paris, as well as take snaps in front of the Eiffel Tower.
He has set his gaze on leaving a positive mark for the upcoming rugby generation.
"I have never been to any Olympics before, so my focus is to go and enjoy, have that exposure, and do what took me there: compete for the gold medal. I want to be a good role model to the younger players," he said.
Since making his national team debut, Japolo has brought a wealth of international experience to Strathmore Leos, propelling them to higher levels.

His impressive performance on the international stage saw coach Kevin Wambua include him in his Africa Men’s 7s provisional squad, eventually traveling to Harare, Zimbabwe, where Kenya qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics. He also captained Team Kenya during the All-African Games in Accra, Ghana.
