The team’s head coach Kevin Wambua has appointed Samuel Asati and George Ooro to captain the team. The duo will step up in the absence of Vincent Onyala and Tony Omondi who will miss the circuit due to contractual issues.
Experienced Kabras RFC’s forward Kevin Wekesa has made the cut together with Brian Mutua. Menengai Oilers’ Dennis Abukuse too is in the travelling party after a stellar 2024 National 7s Circuit performance where he was named the third Impact Player of the Season, having topped the Tisini stats tracker.
He was part of the Kenya Sevens team that finished ninth in the Olympics. He was also in the Morans team that traveled to Mauritius for the Africa Men’s Sevens tournament before joining Shujaa just in time for the Olympics.
Speedster Patrick Odongo is also in the squad. Strathmore Leos’ Nygel Amaitsa, Chrissant Ojwang, Festus Shiasi, Floyd Wambire, and Brayan Ondego too will be on the flight to Dubai.
From Dubai, the squad will travel to Cape Town for the second leg of the series. The team departs on Monday 25 November.
Shujaa will be returning to the HSBC World Rugby 7s Series after one year in the cold. The Kenyans were relegated from the prestigious global event in May 2023 after narrowly losing 12-5 to Canada in the relegation playoffs final at Twickenham Stadium in London.
The then Damian McGrath-coached side needed to win the final to become the 12th core team of the 2024 Series.
They returned to the series after seeing off long-time rivals Germany 33-15 in the HSBC 7s promotion qualifier.
