This year’s edition holds extra significance as the NAC celebrates a century of sporting excellence. Established in 1926, the club remains one of Kenya’s premier members-only institutions, offering top-tier facilities for a wide array of sports. The Prinsloo 7s is hosted by Nakuru RFC.
Mozzart Sport gives you an early look at how the pools are shaping up.
Pool A
Pool A brings together hosts Nakuru RFC, reigning National Sevens Circuit champions Kenya Harlequin, Kabete Stallions, and Mombasa RFC.
Nakuru RFC, also known as Wanyore, will be counting on home advantage and their strong Driftwood 7s showing, where they reached the semifinals after edging out Kenya Harlequin in the quarters.
Despite falling 28-0 to Strathmore Leos in the last four, their campaign was a statement of intent. With former Kenya international Oscar Ouma at the helm, they will be hungry to lift silverware on home soil.
Kenya Harlequin returns to the Prinsloo 7s with unfinished business. After a disappointing sixth-place finish at Driftwood, Quins will be looking to bounce back in Nakuru, the same city they sealed the 2024 National Sevens Circuit title under then-head coach Paul Murunga.
Kabete Stallions will be aiming to shake off a slow start after finishing 10th at the Driftwood 7s with just seven points. The Kabete-based side has the potential to be a dark horse in this group.
Mombasa RFC, hosts of the opening leg, managed just one point at Driftwood and will be keen to avoid back-to-back disappointments as they head inland.
Pool B
Pool B features Driftwood 7s finalists Strathmore Leos, Menengai Oilers, and varsity outfits Daystar Falcons and Zetech Oaks.
Leos, the defending Prinsloo champions, are coming off a narrow 15-14 loss to KCB Rugby in the Driftwood final. Under coach Willis 'Foxie' Ojal, they have displayed consistency and creativity, and will look to keep their Prinsloo crown in Nairobi.
Oilers, who lifted the Challenge Trophy in Mombasa, will enjoy the support of their Nakuru fan base and are keen to keep building momentum.
Zetech Oaks earned promotion to Division One after winning the Driftwood 7s Division Two final against NYS Spades. With the likes of electrifying Brayan Ondego in their ranks, they will be out to cause a few upsets.
Daystar Falcons, even without the explosive Patrick Odongo, remain a formidable side and will want to prove themselves among the big boys.
Pool C
Pool C sees Driftwood 7s champions KCB Rugby face off with familiar foes Nondies, Catholic Monks, and invitational side Kisumu RFC.
KCB head to Nakuru full of confidence after their Mombasa triumph, their first since 2019.
Notably, it is during the 2024 Prinsloo 7s that KCB failed to reach the quarterfinals, sending shockwaves across the rugby fraternity. This time, with a revamped squad and coach Dennis Mwanja at the helm, the Bankers are not letting their guard down.
Nondies, last year’s Prinsloo finalists, had a lukewarm Driftwood outing and settled for 10 points. The Redshirts will be eyeing a return to the podium.
Catholic Monks, who finished ninth in Mombasa, will be looking to climb higher in Nakuru. Their spirited performance has shown they belong in the top tier.
Kisumu RFC, joining as an invitational side, will be eager to start their circuit on a high after missing the opening leg.
Pool D
Pool D brings together Western Kenya rivals Kabras RFC and MMUST Rugby, alongside Impala RFC and Mwamba RFC.
This will be the second meeting between Kabras and MMUST this season. The Sugarmen demolished MMUST 31-0 in the Driftwood quarters and are clear favourites in this group.
The Max Adaka-coached side will aim to maintain their dominance as they push for their first Cup title of the season.
MMUST, stung by that defeat, will be out for revenge and hoping to rise to the challenge this time around.
Impala RFC will set their sights on improving after finishing 11th at Driftwood. Under coach Louis Kisia, the Gazelles are still searching for rhythm and consistency.
Mwamba RFC, who finished last in Mombasa with a solitary point, have been handed an invitation to Nakuru. With Lavin Asego calling the shots from the bench, Kulabu will want to silence critics with a strong comeback.
