Coach Louis Kisia has announced the Kenya Sevens Morans squad for the 2024 Rugby Africa 7s in Mauritius.
Key players Denis Abukuse, William Mwanji, and Festus Shiasi, who last played in the Dubai leg of the Challenger Series, return to strengthen the team. The Morans will compete in Pool A against Madagascar, Nigeria, and Mauritius.
Kisia highlighted the team's thorough preparations at Kasarani, facilitated by the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) and the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK).
The squad trained alongside the Shujaa team, with high-performance sessions led by Kenya Sevens Strength and Conditioning Coach Andrew Amonde.
Kisia expressed confidence in the team's readiness, emphasizing their solid preparation.
The traveling squad features many returning players, including Joel Inzuga, Harmony Wamalwa, Brian Mutua, Ben Salem, Denis Abukuse, Elvis Olukusi, Festus Shiasi, William Mwanji, Richard Liva, and Gabriel Ayimba, who have all trained with the Shujaa during the HSBC Challenger Series.
Edmund Anya also rejoins the team, bringing valuable experience.
New to the setup is Victor "Mola" Odhiambo, who had previously been on the Kenya 7s management radar but missed out due to injury. Now recovered, Odhiambo is set to make his debut for the Morans.
Kisia stated the team's goal is to win the gold medal, aiming to replicate their success from the 2023 Rugby Africa 7s. Confident in their objectives, Kisia believes the team is ready to dominate in Mauritius.
The tournament will take place over two weekends, June 29-30 and July 6-7, 2024. Fixtures will be communicated later.
