The Law Enforcers came agonisingly close to promotion in the 2024/25 campaign, but Amunga noted that disappointment has only sharpened their hunger. This season, the appetite to finish the job is stronger, and it is already showing on the pitch.
That determination was on full display during the Mwamba Cup quarterfinals, where Administration Police edged University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine 13–12 to book a place in the semifinals.
“Our target is to climb to the Championship. The forwards are working really well. We had both set pieces, lineouts, and scrums in our favour. That means we have the ball; we just need to sharpen how we use it to get more points,” he offered.
According to the former playmaker, the team’s progress has been steady despite facing numerous challenges along the way.
“It has been an upward trajectory. There have been a lot of changes and challenges in terms of understanding and execution, but the boys are picking up well. I am very happy with their trajectory,” he said.
Reflecting on the Mwamba Cup win, Amunga praised his players for their composure, especially when the game tilted against them.
“We take the win. It was a very good fight from the boys. Machine really came hard at us, but the boys stayed composed even when we were behind.
They stuck to the plan. Even though there were a few errors, I am very confident and happy about the win,” he noted.
Amunga was, however, quick to point out areas that still need improvement, particularly decision-making in key moments.
“It’s about knowing when to play and when to exit the territory. Sometimes we were overplaying in our own half and piling pressure on ourselves. Those are things we are working on,” he explained.
Before transitioning into coaching, Amunga enjoyed a successful playing career with KCB Rugby, where he was part of a side that won multiple honours for the Ruaraka-based club.
In 2023, he took a different path altogether, graduating from the Administration Police Training College A Campus after a gruelling nine-month training period alongside Collins Shikoli and Jeffrey Oluoch.
