In an interview with Mozzart Sport, the former Nondies and Shujaa star, now in his second stint in the US shared insights into life abroad, both on and off the pitch, and how the move is shaping his professional ambitions.
Salem first visited the US in 2023, a period he says laid the groundwork for a smoother transition upon his return.
“Yes, it did. I already understood the systems and lifestyle, so settling in this time was much smoother,” he said.
That familiarity has allowed him to quickly adapt to the rhythm of life in Austin, a city known for its vibrant culture and passionate sporting environment.
A warm welcome from his new teammates has also eased the transition.
“The team has been welcoming, and off the pitch I’m enjoying the city and its vibe,” he added.
While Kenya is renowned for its raw rugby talent and unmatched passion for the sport, Salem noted that the American rugby setup stands out for its structure and professionalism.
He believes such qualities are vital to his growth.
“Kenya has passion and talent, but here there’s more consistency and resources,” he observed.
Now in his second spell in the States, Salem remains committed to developing every facet of his game.
“I aim to grow as a complete player and position myself for more professional opportunities,” he said.
He views his move to Austin as a strategic stepping stone toward expanding his career globally.
“Playing here gives me exposure and a chance to grow into bigger professional roles,” he explained.
Despite being miles away, Salem keeps a close eye on Kenyan rugby and stays in touch with his former teammates.
“I follow their matches and keep in touch with several of the boys,” he revealed.
Although his current focus is on international opportunities, Salem remains deeply connected to home.
Kenya continues to hold a central place in his heart.
Salem’s journey in rugby has been both inspiring and emotional.
The Dagoretti High School alumnus, celebrated for his sharp decision-making and creativity, made his international debut with Shujaa in May 2022 and has been on an upward trajectory ever since.
A defining moment came during the 2023 Tisap 7s in Eldoret, where he displayed remarkable resilience by featuring for his team shortly after the passing of his mother.
His commitment helped inspire the side to their first National 7s Circuit (NSC) victory in two decades.
Under coach Ben Nyambu, the team edged Strathmore Leos 12–7 to win the penultimate leg of the 2023 NSC, marking their first triumph since 2002, when they lifted the Driftwood 7s after defeating Ulinzi RFC 30–0.
