Kenya Cup side Kisumu RFC are set to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passing of their former Chairman and Patron, Fidel Odinga, during their upcoming Kenya Cup fixture against South Coast Pirates.

The match will take place on Saturday 11 January at the Mamboleo Grounds in Kisumu.

Odinga, the son of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, passed away unexpectedly on January 4, 2015, at the age of 41 in his Karen home.

His death sent shockwaves through the rugby fraternity, with his contributions to the sport and to Kisumu RFC particularly celebrated.

On the day of his burial, January 10, 2015, all Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) matches observed a moment of silence in his memory.

In a statement, Kisumu RFC paid homage to their late Chairman, fondly known as Obange, reflecting on his enduring legacy.

“It’s been exactly 10 years since we lost our beloved Chairman and Patron, Fidel ‘Obange’ Odinga. His impact on Kisumu Rugby is still felt, and his legacy lives on.

This weekend’s match will be dedicated to his honour. May he continue to rest in eternal peace,” Kisumu RFC announced in a statement.

The club went ahead to emphasize Odinga’s transformative role noting that his achievements remain unmatched.

“This Saturday, we remember our Chairman Fidel ‘Obange’ Odinga as we take on our Seaside brothers, South Coast Pirates.

Fidel played a pivotal role in the transformation of Kisumu RFC, and his contributions to the club’s growth remain unmatched,” the statement concluded.

Odinga was a beloved figure in the Kenyan rugby community, known for his passion for the sport and commitment to Kisumu RFC.

Under his leadership, the club experienced significant growth and development. His vision and dedication not only strengthened the team but also inspired countless players and fans.

The match is expected to be closely contested since both teams have not tasted a win since the 2024/25 Kenya Cup season kicked off.

Pirates have suffered consecutive defeats to KCB Rugby, Kabras RFC, and Impala RFC.

Kisumu RFC on the other hand have been on a three-match losing streak. They lost to Menengai Oilers, KCB Rugby, and Kabras RFC.

They will be looking to capitalize on the home advantage to emerge victorious.
