Kenya Sevens scrumhalf Samuel Asati has opened up on his most memorable moments from the recently concluded HSBC SVNS Perth 7s.

Kevin Wambua’s charges' finished 10th after falling to New Zealand in the ninth-place final. That was a drop from the Cape Town 7s where they finished ninth.

Reflecting on Perth 7s, Asati emphasized the unpredictability of the competition, citing major upsets, particularly in Pool C.

Underrated Uruguay stunned rugby giants Fiji 24-17 before pulling off another shocker against New Zealand, winning 17-14. However, Shujaa managed to edge out Uruguay in the final pool match showcasing their resilience.

"My most memorable moment was playing against Fiji and New Zealand. It was a dream come true," Asati shared.

The side started their pool matches with a 29-14 defeat to New Zealand before going down 21-14 to Fiji. Despite the losses, Asati noted that at the HSBC, all teams were equal.

"In HSBC, there are no top-tier sides. Those are the best 12 teams in the world, and all the teams bring a challenge.

For example, Uruguay defeated Fiji and New Zealand, something no one expected. That tells you that all the teams pose a challenge, and we are also growing with the challenge," he continued.

The team is now shifting its focus to the upcoming Vancouver 7s, scheduled for Friday 21 to Sunday 23 February in Canada.

The upcoming leg presents another tough test for Shujaa, as they have been drawn in Pool A alongside Argentina, Paris Olympics champions France, and Great Britain.

Asati believes the tournament will be crucial in shaping the remainder of the HSBC SVNS campaign.

"Vancouver 7s will set the pace because we are nearing the end of the HSBC Series. We will bring our A-game on board," he asserted.

Beyond the international stage, Asati also reflected on their recent domestic match against Quins. He came in the second half and played a crucial role in the team’s victory.

"The game against Quins was amazing. Quins played their hearts out, kudos to them. They challenged us, but we eventually won, and that was the result we wanted. Our main mistake was execution in the green zone," he revealed.

Mozzart Sport chatted shortly with coach Oliver Mang’eni who praised Asati’s speed and dynamism as key assets to KCB’s game plan.

“Asati is electric, he is a good player and he has shown it. He is very fast, and that is the kind of player we are looking to use because that is the brand of rugby we want to use,” Mang’eni concluded.
