Despite the near-perfect start to the campaign, Mang'eni admitted that there is still work to be done
KCB Rugby head coach Oliver Mang'eni has urged his players to be more ruthless with possession despite maintaining an unbeaten start in the Kenya Cup this season.
Since taking over as head coach, Mang'eni has steered the Bankers to seven consecutive wins, with their latest triumph being a commanding 38-16 victory over Kenya Harlequin.
However, the tactician believes his team’s generosity in possession remains a concern.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport after the win against Quins, Mang'eni acknowledged his side’s strong performances but emphasized the need to retain possession better.
"We need to use the ball more. We are very generous. We give away possession very easily. If we stick to our game plan, we will likely play much better than we do.
We need to be selfish with the ball for it to reflect on the scoreboard," he said.
Despite the near-perfect start to the campaign, Mang'eni admitted that there is still work to be done.
"We are ticking our boxes a day at a time, but we still have a lot to work on. It's a work in progress," he offered.
The former Kenya Simbas' lineouts master also shed light on the challenge of aligning his squad to his tactical philosophy, noting that while progress is being made, getting 15 players to play as one is no easy feat.
"So far, things are working well, even though it is not at the pace I wanted them to work. The players are buying into my philosophy. You know it is very hard to get 15 players to play one person's mind.
I give the game plan, but remember, they also have their game plans in their heads. But they are clicking well, and we will celebrate the results soon," he disclosed.
Mang'eni also gave credit to Kenya Harlequin for making KCB work for their victory, especially in the opening stages of the match.
Quins scored first after an infringement from the Bankers. They then struck again, to see them earn six points in the first half.
"We can give it to Quins. They came to play, and in the first 20 minutes, we could not crack their defense. They were the first ones on the board," Mang'eni noted.
With KCB looking to extend their dominance, Mang'eni remains focused on refining his team’s play ahead of their next fixture.
"It was a good match, but now we have to sit down and focus on our next game," he averred.
The unbeaten Bankers will be looking to extend their fine form when they tackle a wounded Nondies RFC in the Enterprise Cup quarterfinal match slated for Saturday 8 February at the Ngong Racecourse.
