Buoyed by their impressive bronze-medal finish at the Safari 7s last month, the Morans are out to showcase their growth and depth as they take on some of the region’s best sides in the two-day tournament.

They finished third at the Safari 7s after defeating Zimbabwe 19–12 in the third-place playoff.

They were drawn in Pool C alongside Reunion, Apache, and Zimbabwe.

The Morans started strong at the Safari 7s, securing dominant wins against Reunion (24–0), Apache (28–10), and Zimbabwe (27–7) to top their group.

They edged UK Select 21–19 in a thrilling quarterfinal before bowing out narrowly, 14–12, to Shogun Rugby in the semis. Despite the setback, they bounced back with a gritty victory over Zimbabwe Cheetahs in the bronze match, showcasing depth and resilience.

Head Coach Kevin Wambua has made ten changes from that squad, opting for a mix of youth and experience as he looks to build on the momentum.

Missing from the roster are key figures such as Elvis Olukusi (KCB), the Strathmore Leos trio of Barnabas Owuor, Elton Amalemba, and Arnold Muita, Arnold Agonda (Daystar Falcons), and Eugene Ojiambo (Mwamba).

In their place, Wambua has recalled seasoned campaigners including Gabriel Ayimba, Dennis Abukuse, Chrissant Ojwang and Floyd Wabwire, whose leadership is expected to steady the youthful side.

“We are building from the Safari 7s, and the preparations have been good. The focus has been on performance and how we can build on what we achieved. The boys have responded well so far, and the objective is to give them confidence in their abilities with a bit of tactical and technical upskill,” Wambua said.

Leading the squad is captain John Okoth, who returns to action after recovering from injury. He will be supported by an exciting lineup of both familiar and emerging names.

Among the newcomers are Menengai Oilers’ speedster Daniel Kipchirchir, who is set for his international debut, and Strathmore Leos’ prolific try-scorer Victor Mola, whose stellar form in the National Sevens Circuit earned him the top try-scorer and top points-scorer titles after crossing the line 42 times.

Daystar Falcons’ powerhouse Clinton Amukwachi joins the traveling party, bringing his trademark physicality to the forward pack, while Kabras RFC’s rising talent Jackson Siketi and Impala RFC’s dependable David Nyangige also made the cut after consistent domestic performances.

The Morans will face stiff competition in Harare, with hosts Zimbabwe expected to field two sides alongside Zambia, Botswana, and several South African franchise teams.
