Kenya Harlequin shower Paul Murunga with praise after announcing departure

It is now official that Kenya Harlequin have parted ways with head coach Paul Murunga, Mozzart Sport can exclusively report. He will depart the club effective Thursday, 1 May.

Murunga, who joined the club at the start of the 2022/23 season, has been instrumental in building a strong foundation, instilling a winning mindset, and nurturing homegrown talent.

The former Kenya Sevens head coach was appointed by Quins in May 2022. During his tenure, he led the club to impressive successes, including lifting the 2024 National Sevens Circuit, Driftwood 7s, Ingo 7s, and the Mwamba Cup.

He was awarded the Kenya Harlequin Spirit of Rugby Shield at the 2023 annual club dinner.

Speaking on his departure, Murunga was grateful for his time at the Ngong Road-based club, noting that it was good while it lasted.

“It’s been a privilege to serve this great club. I am proud of what we have achieved," he said.

On his side, Quins' chairman Victor Sudi noted that Murunga's impact on the team will forever be felt. He went on to wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

“Paul brought deep knowledge and passion to his roles at Kenya Harlequin. We are grateful for his three years with Quins, and we wish him the very best in his coaching journey ahead.

He will always be welcome as a friend at Kenya Harlequin," he offered.

Quins' Director of Rugby Joel Nganga also joined in the farewells, noting that Murunga's place in the club's history is assured.

“Paul leaves Kenya Harlequin as a winner. He revitalised the men’s squad and played a key role in the club’s return to women’s and age-grade rugby.

He guided us to multiple trophies, and his place in Quins’ history is assured. Good luck in your future endeavours, Pau," Nganga said.

Following the conclusion of the 2024/2025 season, Kenya Harlequin is conducting a full review with a revamped management team structure to be announced soon.
