Former Kenya Cup champions KCB Rugby have enlisted the expertise of DHL Stormers Forwards Coach Rito Hlungwani to fine-tune their squad ahead of a high-stakes Kenya Cup showdown against defending champions Kabras Sugar.
The top-of-the-table clash is set for Saturday, 8 March, at the ASK Show Grounds in Kakamega.
The DHL Stormers are a South African rugby team competing in the United Rugby Championship and are renowned for their structured play and forward dominance.
The team hosts their matches at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town, and the Bankers are hoping to channel some of that pedigree into their upcoming fixture.
The Oliver Mang’eni-coached side is leaving nothing to chance, with both teams vying for the coveted top spot in the regular season.
Hlungwani’s inclusion is expected to strengthen the team’s tactical approach, particularly in set-pieces, breakdown efficiency, and forward dominance.
The Bankers currently lead the Kenya Cup table with 50 points after ten rounds and aim to secure a home final, a feat the club last achieved in 2006. However, their title ambitions hinge on overcoming a formidable Kabras side in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
KCB RFC head coach Oliver Mang’eni welcomed Hlungwani’s input, emphasizing his significance in their preparations.
“Having a coach of his caliber working with our forwards is a big boost. Kabras is a strong side, and we need to be at our best. The pressure is on them to perform in front of their home fans, while our focus remains on executing our game plan,” Mang’eni said.
Hlungwani also highlighted the areas of focus in KCB’s preparations.
“Our focus has been on refining key areas to ensure the team is well-prepared for the upcoming challenge,” he offered.
The highly anticipated match will determine the league leader and, provided they progress to the finals, grant the winner the hosting rights for the Kenya Cup final.
Defending champions Kabras RFC will be looking to reclaim the top spot and secure a home final. They moved to the second position on the log following a narrow 7-3 victory over Nondies RFC, a match that saw them struggle to break down their opponents’ defense.
Meanwhile, KCB Rugby edged Menengai Oilers 29-27 to ascend to the top of the table.
KCB then cemented their lead with a commanding 69-9 victory over Impala RFC on Saturday, 1 March 1, while Kabras RFC had to fight hard for a 20-14 win against Menengai Oilers.
Everything is at stake for the two teams, making this clash a must-watch.
