The regional presence will be felt strongly through the Tsunami East Africans side, a crowd-favourite outfit coached by John McKittrick, who has previously handled the USA and Cook Islands.
The squad draws talent from Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, and New Zealand, giving it a dynamic international mix. Veteran players include Asuman Mugerwa, who is making his seventh appearance at the tournament, and Onsomu, now on his third tour.
McKittrick has assembled a strong technical bench as well, with backs coach Benjamin Breeze, forwards coach Dave Hughes, and strength and conditioning coach Allan Otim forming part of the support staff.
The Tsunami East Africans are scheduled to face defending champions Tradition YCAC in the opening match of the men’s competition at 7:45 on Wednesday morning.
The 2026 edition of the tournament marks a historic 40th anniversary and, for the first time, will be played across three days.
Known for its fast-paced, high-scoring format, the competition continues to attract elite talent from across the globe and serves as the curtain-raiser to Hong Kong’s famed “Rugby Week,” which also features the iconic Hong Kong Sevens.
Fans attending the event will also enjoy access to the “Happy Wednesday” race night at the Happy Valley Racecourse on Wednesday, 15 April, blending rugby with entertainment.
The wider program includes the HKFC Youth 10s (Saturday, 11 to Sunday, 12 April), catering to age groups from U5 to U18, as well as a revamped fan village and the newly introduced Primal Race competition set for Friday, 17 to Sunday, 19 April.
Since its inception in 1986 to mark the centenary of the Hong Kong Football Club, the tournament has grown into a staple of the international rugby calendar.
