The tactician has made a single change to the side that impressed in the second tier of the HSBC World Championship Series.

Wambua has largely maintained faith in the squad that finished runners-up in the 2026 SVNS 2 campaign, opting for continuity as Shujaa begin their three-leg push for promotion.

The only alteration sees Kabras Sugar scrum-half Brian Tanga come in to replace Chrisant Ojwang, who has been ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Tanga’s return marks a significant boost for the side. The experienced playmaker, who made his Shujaa debut at the 2016 Hong Kong Sevens, is back in national colours for the first time this season after recovering from a neck injury sustained during the 2025 Dala 7s.

His presence is expected to bring composure and leadership as Kenya target a return to the top tier.

Reigning National Sevens Circuit champions KCB RFC lead the contribution with five players, including co-captains George Ooro and Samuel Asati. They are joined by Vincent Onyala, Festus Shiasi, and Floyd Wabwire.

Kabras Sugar RFC provide two players in Tanga and Kevin Wekesa.

The squad also features Menengai Oilers duo Denis Abukuse and John Okoth, whose defensive resilience was key in Kenya’s shutout win against Canada in Sao Paulo.

Additional selections include Nygel Amaitsa of Strathmore Leos, Gabriel Ayimba, son of former Shujaa legend Benjamin Ayimba, as well as speedster Patrick Odongo of Daystar Falcons, and David Nyangige.

Shujaa have been handed a tough Pool C draw at the Kai Tak Sports Stadium, where they will face Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, the latter having edged Kenya to the SVNS 2 title.

The clash against the Americans is expected to be particularly intense. Kenya heads into the encounter with confidence after a commanding 31–14 victory over the Eagles in Sao Paulo, a result that served as redemption following previous narrow defeats.

Matches against Australia and New Zealand, however, will demand precision and discipline, with Wambua’s charges needing to be clinical against two of the sport’s traditional powerhouses.

Shujaa must finish among the top eight teams across the Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux legs to secure promotion back to the elite HSBC SVNS 1 circuit for the 2027 season.
