Kabras thumped CUEA Monks 78-0 but coach Carlos Kyata was not impressed with the level of officiating
Kabras RFC head coach Carlos Kyatwa has raised his concerns over the quality of officiating in the league.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport after their 78-0 victory over Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) Monks in the third Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Kenya Cup match played at the ASK Kakamega Showground on Saturday, Kyatwa was concerned that the inconsistency in officiating was breaking momentum in the game and frustrating the players.
"There was a lot of momentum breaking. There is a lot to be talked about the officiating. There was a lot of starts and continuity broken and sometimes I think it is done deliberately and the referee allows it. It is a conversation between coaches and referees. How do we address that issue because it is breaking momentum? It is one of the most frustrating things," Kyatwa lamented.
The tactician has led Kabras RFC to an impressive three opening matches of the season. They kicked off their campaign with a 72-12 victory over Kisumu RFC before seeing off Nondies RFC 40-0. They ended their year with a recent 78-0 win over CUEA Monks.
Kyatwa observed that their defense had tremendously improved. Out of the three matches played, they have only conceded a try against Kisumu RFC.
"I am very impressed. The boys delivered. One of the most astounding things about the team right now is the defense. We have improved in terms of our setpieces and structure," the Kenya Simbas assistant coach said.
"We made a few mistakes during the first half. It took us 22 minutes to score two tries. It shows we took a bit longer. But we re-gathered ourselves and we started playing according to our structure," he offered.
Coach Kyatwa also underscored the importance of a mental skills coach to enable them to tackle other issues that may arise on the pitch and beyond without being frustrated. He insisted that the Sugarmen will be looking to win everything that is on offer.
"We are still on course with our goal alignment. We want to take everything that is on offer. The boys are in good spirits, but the issue of mental skills coach is needed because this season for us is an issue of how mentally prepared we are to play beyond any other issues that may arise on the field. We have never been behind, but how are we supposed to face that situation when we get there?" he posed.
Their impressive performance sees them maintain the top spot on the log after having bagged maximum points in each match and scored 40 points or more, crossing the 70th point mark twice. They are separated from second-placed KCB Rugby by point differential.
