Following two successful outings of the National 7s Circuit, Kabras RFC head coach Felix Ayange is pursuing lofty dreams as the side gears up for Prinsloo 7s set for August 5-6 at the Nakuru Athletic Club.
The Sugarmen reached the finals of the Dala 7s but lost 17-5 to an elegant KCB Rugby side. They would then bounce back in Driftwood 7s to see off opponents and claim the title following a hard-earned 10-7 victory over Menengai Oilers in the nail-biting finals.
Heading to the third leg, Ayange has refused to accept his charges are still underdogs in the shorter version of the game.
The former Kenya 7s international noted that compared to last season, the side has been making tremendous strides in bettering their performance. The Sugarmen only managed a Kakamega 7s win in the 2022 NSC after a 19-7 win over Menengai Oilers.
"Looking at the goals set, we have surpassed our targets so far. We are up and beyond what we set out to achieve. We did a review of what happened last circuit, tied a few loose ends. We improved on our fitness, executions, and our combinations were combining unlike the last leg where we got it right during Kakamega," Ayange noted.
With an eye on continuous eye on improvement, Ayange disclosed that they will be introducing a few fresh faces in Prinsloo who have seamlessly gelled with the experienced squad.
“The experienced squad offered the much-needed guidance to the young ones. They are a motivation. The crop of players we have are all eligible for selection to the national team. It is a well-balanced squad," the former Shujaa playmaker offered.
The team managed to navigate the challenges of the opening two legs without major injuries, leaving them in an advantageous position. The Sugarmen further capitalized on the three-weeks break to fine-tune their skills. They will be eager to return to the pitch to showcase their fine form.
“We have rested well during the break, changed and retained a few things. We are working round in all areas. We have not focused on one area and forgotten the other," Ayange said.
Kabras RFC have been placed in Pool A that sees them face Kisumu RFC, Homeboyz RFC, and neighbors Western Bulls. The Bulls are the only new faces in this pool. The other sides faced off during Driftwood 7s with Kabras RFC recording 3/3 wins to top the pool. Kabras RFC saw off Kisumu RFC 36-5 during their last meeting before edging Homeboyz RFC 35-12.
Ayange is optimistic that his charges will impress despite the fierce competition.
"We are on top, and everyone wants to beat us and leave a mark. Any team that beats us will be proud. We are no longer underdogs and we expect stiff competition from the rest of the teams," he said.
Kabras RFC head to Nakuru bolstered with their top-of-the-table position with 41 points. They will be looking to fight tooth and nail to be crowned champions of the 15th edition of Prinsloo 7s.
