KCB Rugby’s Safari 7s head coach Jacob Ojee has lauded the club’s squad depth as their strongest asset ahead of the 2025 Kenya Cup season.

Ojee's remarks come following the Bankers' impressive show at the just-concluded Safari 7s tournament.

KCB made a return to the competition after missing the 2024 edition.

They fielded a youthful side that finished fifth despite missing six key players who were away on national duty.

Among the absentees were; Kenya Sevens captains George Ooro and Samuel Asati, alongside Floyd Wabwire, Vincent Onyala, Festus Shiasi, and Elvis Olukusi, who featured for Morans.

Ojee was standing in for head coach Andrew Amonde, who was with the national team.

Under his tutelage, the side showcased its next generation of stars while maintaining their trademark competitiveness.

“It has been an amazing experience, especially with the team finishing fifth,” Ojee said. “We are trying to blend the experienced players like Brian Wahinya and Bramwel Kilwake with the younger boys, and they really stepped up in a big way,” Ojee told Mozzart Sport.

KCB were drawn in Pool B alongside Shogun, Uganda, and Nyati.

They opened their campaign with a narrow 17-14 opening loss to Shogun, before bouncing back with emphatic wins: 40-12 over Uganda and 21-7 against Nyati, to book a spot in the quarterfinals.

They were later edged 19-10 by Zimbabwe before defeating Nyati 31-10 and UK Select 19-17 to secure fifth place overall.

What their performance brought to display was the team’s remarkable player depth, a factor Ojee believes will be pivotal as the club sets its sights on reclaiming dominance in the 15s version of the game.

The competition at the club is very tight. At the start of the circuit, we prided ourselves on having the most depth, and that has clearly shown. Having six of our players in the national team while still fielding a very competitive side that went toe-to-toe with the best is no small achievement,” he praised.

The former Kenya Sevens captain added that the internal competition within the squad will elevate the team’s overall performance heading into the Kenya Cup season.

“I am confident that when the Kenya Cup boys return, they will face serious competition for spots. It will push everyone to be at their best, while the younger players will keep growing and naturally break into the first team,” he offered.

The Bankers will be back in action on Saturday, 18 October at the Impala Floodlights, where they will face defending champions Menengai Oilers in what promises to be a mouthwatering clash.
