Kenya Sevens national team, Shujaa, kicked off their Hong Kong 7s campaign in dominant fashion, securing a 19-0 victory over Spain in their opening pool match at the Kai Tak Stadium on Friday, 28 March.
Spain, the Dubai Sevens silver medalists, had the upper hand the last time these two teams met, defeating Kenya 14-7 in Cape Town. However, Shujaa came into this encounter with one goal in mind: revenge.
Kenya started with intensity, immediately testing Spain’s defense. Despite losing an early lineout, Shujaa refused to let the setback define their performance.
Spain maintained possession in the opening minutes, but Kenya’s defensive resilience was on full display, with Dennis Abukuse making a crucial tackle to deny Spain an early lead.
Shujaa finally broke the deadlock through speedster Patrick Odongo, who capitalized on a loose defense and left his markers behind to score the match's first try.
Spain struggled to break through Kenya’s rock-solid defense, and their errors gifted Shujaa crucial opportunities. Kenya’s scrum dominance and quick ball movement set up George Ooro for the second try, which was successfully converted.
With a 12-0 halftime lead, Kenya came back even stronger in the second half.
Ooro’s physicality forced Spain into touch, and moments later, Samuel Asati caught the Spanish defense off guard, darting over the line for Kenya’s third try. The successful conversion extended the lead to 19-0.
Spain attempted to mount a comeback, but Kenya’s defensive discipline remained intact. The commentator summed it up best: “This is probably the best performance we have seen from Kenya so far.”
Shujaa cleverly managed the clock in the final moments, ensuring a clean sheet and a confidence-boosting start to their campaign.
With the perfect revenge mission complete, Kenya now shifts focus to their next pool match against Great Britain at 9:23 AM.
The British side heads into the clash on the back of a narrow 12-7 win over France, setting up a thrilling encounter.
