The two sides both advanced out of Pool B after winning two games and drawing against each other.

Driftwood 7s reigning champions KCB RFC kept their hopes of defending the tournament alive after securing a spot in the main cup quarter finals scheduled for Sunday 19 June at the Mombasa Sports Club.

In their three Pool B matches played on the opening day of the tourney, the overall 7s defending champions picked two wins and one draw to top their group courtesy of a superior points differential.

The Bankers got off to a flying start as they brushed aside Championship side Jumia Pay Pirates 51-0 in their opening match before managing to see off Daystar Falcons 15-0 in the second game.

Facing fierce rivals Kabras Sugar in the third game, the Dennis Mwanja coached side laboured and fought hard to force a 12-12 draw against the sugarmen as they closed off their action, assistant head coach Andrew Amonde lauding the side for getting over the line.

"From where we left in the last tournament to now, we have picked up well as were able to get the two wins that we needed to get to the quarter finals. We are still trying out some patterns with some of the new players in the side but things have worked out well so far for us. Our focus is just on ourselves and building on each game as we go," the retired Shujaa veteran told Mozzart Sport.

From pool B, KCB were joined in the last eight by Kabras who also won two games and drew one, beating Daystar Falcons and Jumia Pay 28-0 and 22-5 respectively

Current 2022 Series leaders Strathmore Leos managed to overcome a small blip along the way as they also advanced to the last 8.

Having beaten hosts Mombasa 29-0 in their first match, the team lost their second game 17-14 to Homeboyz but a 51-0 whitewash over Impala managed to get the Louis Kisia coached side over the line.

A perfect Homeboyz who won all their matches on day one topped that pool A after winning 5-10 and 24-7 in their other matches.

Pool C saw Menengai Oilers and Kenya Harlequin sail through as Mwamba and Nondies book the remaining two spots from the other pool D.

The bottom two teams will square it out in the Challenge Trophy.
