The dynamic centre has been out of action for nearly six months following a serious leg injury he suffered during the Dubai 7s in December 2024.
The injury occurred just moments after he was introduced in the second half of a ninth-place playoff against Ireland. It sidelined him from the remaining legs of the HSBC SVNS Series.
Now fully rehabilitated, Ojwang not only returns to the squad but will also serve as assistant captain under George Ooro.
The Kenya Morans, who serve as Shujaa’s development side, will be aiming to improve on their sixth-place finish in the 2024 edition, also held at the Labourdonnais Grounds in Mauritius.
The team’s coach, Louis Kisia, has injected fresh blood into the squad, handing debuts to four exciting players: Felix Okoth, Javan Otieno, Matoka Matoka, and Philip Okeyo.
Notably, Okeyo, a standout performer for Chipu at the 2023 Barthes Cup and World Rugby U20 Trophy in Scotland, is the younger brother of current Shujaa star John Okoth.
Also making headlines is the inclusion of Menengai Oilers’ Dennis Abukuse, who represented Shujaa across all legs of the recent HSBC SVNS Series.
Kabras RFC flyer Lameck Ambetsa makes a comeback for the first time since featuring in the 2024 Paris Olympics, stepping in for Patrick Odongo, who is currently playing in India’s Rugby Premier League.
Jackson Siketi, another Kabras ace who made his senior debut during the Vancouver 7s and featured for Morans in the 2024 Safari 7s, has also made the cut alongside teammates Brian Mutua and William Mwanji.
Speedster Floyd Wabwire, who impressed during his recent stint with Shujaa, rounds out the energetic and youthful squad.
Kenya has been placed in a competitive Pool A alongside defending champions Uganda, Ivory Coast, and returning side Ghana. Uganda, who dominated last year’s tournament, will be eyeing a successful title defense.
Pool B features traditional giants South Africa alongside Burkina Faso, Zambia, and Nigeria, while Pool C includes Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, and tournament hosts Mauritius.
