Andrew Amonde reveals when Nyangige and Amaitsa could make KCB debut

KCB Rugby head coach Andrew Amonde has hinted that new signings David Nyangige and Nygel Amaitsa could soon make their debuts for the Bankers, although he admits breaking into a winning side will not be easy.

The Bankers strengthened their squad during the recently concluded transfer window by signing Amaitsa from Strathmore Leos and Nyangige from Impala RFC, with both players yet to feature competitively for the reigning Dala 7s champions.

Speaking after KCB ended their nine-year wait for the Prinsloo 7s title with a 19-12 victory over Kabras RFC on Sunday, 26 July, Amonde explained that their success has made team selection even more competitive.

"I cannot promise much because a winning team is very hard to change, but I know that they will get an opportunity," Amonde said.

The former Kenya Sevens captain praised his players for executing their plan to perfection in Nakuru, revealing that reclaiming the Prinsloo 7s crown was one of their major objectives after missing out last season.

"We stuck to our plan; a game at a time and a tournament at a time. This is one of the tournaments that we did not win last season, so we were really targeting the title. We worked so hard as a team, and we got what we wanted," he said.

The victory marked KCB's first Prinsloo 7s triumph since 2017 and provided the perfect response after finishing without the title of the Nakuru leg last season.

Amonde also moved to allay fears over Vincent Onyala after the Kenya Sevens star appeared to pick up an injury during the final against Kabras.

"It is a journey. We have started so well, and if we can build on the momentum and see how we will succeed. Onyala picked a knock, but he is fine," Amonde assured.

Attention now shifts to the Dala 7s in Kisumu from Saturday, 2 to Sunday, 3 August, where KCB will be aiming to successfully defend their title. The Bankers return to a venue that holds special significance, having also clinched last season's overall National Sevens Circuit title there.

Amonde believes the tournament will not only present another opportunity to challenge for silverware but also allow him to assess the depth of his squad, potentially opening the door for players like Amaitsa and Nyangige.

"Dala is always special to us. It is our home; we always play there as if we are playing at home. I know there are a lot of expectations from the team.

We still have new guys that we are bringing into the system, so it is an opportunity to give others a chance and see the big squad that we have," he said.

KCB have been drawn in Pool A for the Dala 7s alongside Impala RFC, Zetech Oaks, and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Rugby as they chase a second consecutive tournament title and continue their impressive start to the 2026 National Sevens Circuit.
