The national women's rugby sevens team, Kenya Lionesses, marched confidently into the quarterfinals of the Africa Women’s Sevens after wrapping up their day one assignments with a flawless performance, sealing a ruthless 37-0 victory over Ghana on Saturday, 15 November at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.

The result followed their dominant performance, where they registered an emphatic 44-0 win over Ivory Coast.

Their second outing was no different, as the Lionesses extended their supremacy over Ghana, whom they also thrashed 41-0 during the 2024 edition.

Kenya imposed their authority early, setting the tempo with precise handling and fluid interplay. Grace Adhiambo opened her account for the tournament with a well-worked try, giving the hosts early momentum.

Ghana’s attempt to slow down the game backfired when an infringement handed Kenya a lineout opportunity. Naomi Amuguni secured possession and linked up seamlessly with Freshia Oduor, who finished off the move for Kenya’s second try.

Amuguni almost added her name to the scoresheet moments later but was forced to ground the ball short. Still, the pressure remained unrelenting.

As the hooter sounded for halftime, Janet Okello sliced through the Ghanaian defence to score Kenya’s third, sending the Lionesses into the break firmly in control.

The second half saw Kenya pick up right where they left off. A clean lineout execution triggered a wave of crisp passes that again found Okello in space, and the speedster wasted no time grabbing her second try to extend the lead to 27-0.

Moments later, Moreen Muritu dotted down another unconverted try as Kenya continued to dismantle Ghana’s defensive structure.

The final blow came after another Ghanaian infringement gifted the Lionesses the ball. Nelly Chikombe powered through for the last try of the match, eerily similar to her earlier effort against Ivory Coast, sealing the 37-0 triumph.

The Lionesses will face Zimbabwe in the quarterfinals slated for Sunday, 15 November.
